Interesting story on U.S. Healthcare

As one of those un-insured this makes my blood boil, especially when that Hunter bitch tries to sugar coat the industry position.

Part II

Part III

All this comes from a discussion thread about the California Nurses Association publishing a study that indicated expanding medicare could cover every single person in the U.S. and cost comparatively little.

You’ve heard me say this before, we need to knock down the insurance and billing companies first. They are the prime obstacle to having single payer, or universal, or what have you.

Profit and greed should NEVER, EVER override health.

1. What was the last movie you saw in a theater?

It’s been so long that I honestly cannot remember. With the advent of Netflix, net video, etc. I’ve honestly not stepped into a theater in many years. I think the last time I was in one it was $10 per ticket if that gives any indication. Totally forgettable movie too.

I guess if they really want to get me into a theater they’d stop re-hashing old movies. You can’t tell me there isn’t a good idea left in Hollywood. E.g. Stranger in a Strange Land. That would be a rockin’ good movie if it followed the book at all.

2. What is your favorite movie theater snack?

Popcorn but again even that is mass produced crap now. I’m often of the opinion that it isn’t the lawyers we ought to put up against the wall, it’s the MBA’s.

3. Have you ever snuck in ‘outside’ food into a theater?

Not so much snuck. I’ve carried 500ml bottles of drinks in and nobody has said a word. That’s the key to getting away with breaking a ‘rule’. Act as though you know you have the right to do what you’re doing.

4. Have you ever made out in a theater?

Who hasn’t? I’m sort of discrete about it of course but if you’re making out you obviously aren’t there to see the movie.

5. What is the ‘farthest’ you have gone in a theater?

All the way down to the front row.

Bonus (as in optional): What is one of your favorite movie sex scene?

Are we talking everyday movies or porn? I find very few sex scenes notable in the former.

This had to be one of the lamer TMI’s.

Not just the oath!

This is a great sum up of Bush 43, well, missing a few things though the shredded Constitution is sitting on the desk.

From Bush to Obama
From Bush to Obama

I won’t enumerate the abuses by the Bush administration though. There are plenty of other sites out there doing this.

The relief though is overwhelming. I’ve been particularly encouraged by the actions and words of President Obama over the past week. Many of his actions have been dismantling the abuses perpetrated by Bush and to me that is a very good start.

Applause, support and encouragement are also due for Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. He’s really digging in to go after Bush and Co.

QUEERANTINE: Beware The Gay

Came across this little video. Nice parody of the religious rights views on gay people.

Thought you’d all enjoy it but one warning, it doesn’t work in Firefox, works in IE though. As to other browsers, since I haven’t located a flash player for my iPod yet I can’t say if it works in Safari.

I’m checking out other vids on DoorQ right now. Should be interesting.

And special, Inspector Hieronymus and the Mischievous Houseboy.

A show I stumbled upon

I was reading about hulu.com pulling all episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. on FX. The series was created by cutie Rob McElhenney who plays Mac on the show, and Charlie Day who plays of course Charlie on the show.

I remember seeing a trailer for it a long time ago and thought it looked like it could be funny. I wasn’t wrong.

You can watch the entire series on here until the 25th of January.

What is interesting is all the gay references in the film, stuff like teabagging, cream on the guys face, etc. It definitely plays with the edge.

Each episode is only about 20 minutes long but in that 20 minutes you’re bound to have one good gut busting laugh.

It’s really funny.

1. Have you ever dated/married purely for money?

Not at all. I’m bright enough to make my own way thank you.

2. What is your type?

Cute with some meat on the bone. Skinny little twinks never did a thing for me. I need someone who doesn’t mind getting a little rough.

3. What is the best sex game you have ever played?

Never really recall having played a sex game. Does that make me odd?

4. Have you ever given or received an orgasm from a person whose last name you did not know?

Yes and no. I’m a pretty good investigator. I can pretty much have their full birth name, DOB, SSN, credit report etc. in record time. But sometimes I just didn’t bother to go through the whole process.

5. Have you ever masturbated in front of a sexual partner?

Yes I have. And it was mutual. And back in the day I could do target practice with ejaculation. Seriously, lots of it and long distance.

Bonus (as in optional):At what age do you think men and women reach their sexual peak? Do you think you have hit yours yet?

It’s said men reach their peak at 19, I say that’s bullshit. Men start reaching their peak at around 25, and then start losing it at about 60.

Ditto for women.

Of course after 60 I have no idea what goes on and I’m 16 years out from that age. Yikes!

Iranian Students hope for change with Obama Administration

This is amazing news to me but I’ve seen various things on the net that indicate the hard liners in Iran are between a rock and a very hard place.

But you can see the effect of the election and coming inauguration is having on the world community. That’s a big change from what we got with the Bush administration which tried to enforce the U.S. view at the point of a gun.

I recall a video I’d seen online some time ago. The title escapes me but a BBC reporter went into Iran and visited various Iranians. What most astounded me was that the Tehran is a modern city. The only other images of Tehran that I’d ever seen were the streets mobbed with protesters.

Sure, there is still an overt religious culture there but consider what the article says. Over 70% of Iran’s population is under 30 years old. They never participated in the 1979 revolution.

What I think saddens me more is that Iran was controlled by first the British, then the U.S. As is the CIA’s recurrent theme, knock down a democratically elected government and install the guy friendly to U.S. policy. We’re seeing this in Iraq an Afghanistan.

Then of course there’s the war that Iran and Iraq fought, remember that? It explains why there aren’t many old people in Iran. And of course the U.S. was neck deep in that one, recall that Saddam Hussein was once a ‘friend’ of the U.S. during the Reagan and Bush 41 administrations and even into Clinton’s administration.

I think maybe the real U.S. policy with regard to the middle east is summed up in “Kill em’ all, let God sort em’ out.” since it’s much easier to extract oil if there is no interference from pesky people.

Perhaps it is time to open diplomatic channels with Iran again.

Another thing I’ve noted is the theoretical discussion of an al Qaeda nuclear weapon detonated in the United States. It still astounds me that people don’t realize that the people who were responsible for the 9/11/01 hijackings were majority Saudi Arabian. Al Qaeda is a Saudi export from Wahabism.

So I noted one poster saying that if they did that, we should wipe Mecca off the face of the earth. I also added we shout hit Medina too. Might as well do the whole thing. I know I’m advocating another Crusade with that attitude but it doesn’t have to come to that.

What if we became energy independent? By all signs that is going to happen whether big energy likes it or not. At that point we stop importing oil from despotic regimes. Dry up the oil supply and the money supply dries up with it.

We cannot win a land or sea combat war with Al Qaeda, but we can win an economic war.

Elaine Rittmann: Fairer coverage, younger teachers needed

01:00 AM EST on Friday, January 16, 2009

I listened to Governor Carcieri’s speech on Jan. 7 with much interest. I applaud him for having the courage to change our system.

With skyrocketing medical- insurance costs hitting those in the public sector, public employees should receive benefits commensurate with the private sector and pay similar premiums and co-payments.

Their benefits should be terminated upon retirement and they should have to find coverage in the same manner as non-state workers.

Listening to the Governor can be hazardous to your health and mental well being. Carcieri is the clearest example of what I know as failing upward.

I can’t wait for the 2010 elections though I’m not exactly happy with the candidate choices. So far I know that Patrick Lynch, Elizabeth Roberts, Frank Caprio and David Cicilline have all voiced intentions of running. And if truth be known, I’d say Lynch gets it because his brother is state Dem Party Chair for the moment. I’ve heard no rumblings from the Republican party.

When I first started as as state employee back in 2001 we didn’t pay a dime for our coverage and we had $5 prescription co-pays and $10 office visit co-pays. By the time I’d gone back as a state employee in 2004, we were paying a hefty chunk of the cost of our coverage plus our co pays skyrocketed.

As to termination of benefits upon retirement that just shifts the burden a bit but you pay for it one way or another until the day we have a single payer or universal health care system in this country. It’ll be an uphill battle but if we stick together we can overcome the forces of big business insurers and billing companies.

With regard to pensions, I have to put aside a large part of my salary into a 401(k) plan and an IRA if I am to have any hope of retiring at 66. The funds will be there when I need them, but I will not have a 3 percent cost-of-living increase yearly. State workers should have to make contributions to a plan as well.

Why should we foot the bill for them to retire early when we have to work well into our 60’s and find our own way to afford retirement? When did things get so twisted around that we support a plan that clearly puts the private-sector worker at such a disadvantage? .

Because it is the deal that was negotiated with the governor. Carcieri likes to go back on his word and his efforts to vilify state employees really sticks in my craw. Instead keep reading and you’ll see where the real anger should be focused.

State employees currently kick 8.75% and teachers contribute 9.25% of their gross pay ito the RI Employee’s Retirement System. As it currently exists, you have to be in for a certain amount of time before you can retire, I believe the minimum is 20 years and now the age limits have gone up too, I think it’s 62 before you can really get full benefit. Funding of these benefits isn’t solely on the taxpayer, it’s on all state employees too.

As far as COLA, so how else do they supplement their income? Get a part time job? That just shifts the burden elsewhere too.

You’re right though, the general attitude toward the working class in this country has been rather poor since the Reagan years. The name of the game has been the bottom line, screw the assets called employees.

I also think the April 1 cutoff for the retirees is great. When the teachers due to retire are gone, we will have an influx of new teachers, with new ideas, and more modern teaching methods. I think that this will benefit our children. Thanks again, Governor, for bringing Rhode Island into the 21st Century!

ELAINE RITTMAN

Coventry

I hate to break this to you but there hasn’t been a sea change in teaching methods for at least the past twenty years. It might be a little but tougher to certify but nothing more than that. You have basic learning methods, the visual, the aural and the haptic. That will never change.

And here is another thing. You can most certainly drop a new teacher into a school without too much stress because teachers are trained for that. However, in the rest of the state there are people with very specialized institutional knowledge. You think the state operates like a real business but it doesn’t. It’s convoluted to say the least. But always keep in mind the one body that controls it all.

The body I speak of is the legislature. They’re the ones who control the purse strings in this state. See this point about the tax breaks and give-aways that our legislature granted as of October of 2008.

Governor Carcieri is the master of misdirection.

And I say fuck you Governor Carcieri for keeping RI mired in the 20th Century!

Help me defile the host

I’ve been following the saga of Pharyngula and the cracker for some time now.

I find the attitude of the Catholic Church insufferable. It’s a cracker! Saying a bunch of mumbo jumbo over it doesn’t do anything. It’s all in your own heads.

With that in mind I believe I’ve located a source of host crackers and I’ve chosen the site of the defilement of the host but I need a way to defile it. PZ Meyers drove a rusty nail through it but to me that’s too tame. I want something that without a doubt says that I defile the host, the body of Jesus Christ himself.

I want something that will really send a message containing my venom and contempt for the Catholic church. A Lucite embeddment perhaps? Nah, not nasty enough. How about burning it, hey there’s an idea. If it is the body of Christ you’d think maybe it could extinguish the flames. Not a fat chance that would happen but still, it has a certain appeal to it.

I’ve found a few sites on the web that sell the crackers in batches from 50 up to 500. Since I am a card carrying man of the cloth myself (Ask me about that sometime, it’s a rather funny story when you consider I’m a rabid atheist!) I can sign up my ‘church’ too.

I’ve also found some recipes for it. I’m a very competent cook so I could do that too.
