MetroPCS 4G Network in Providence, RI is having issues

Now this is interesting. There are two MetroPCS phones in the house. Mine, the Samsung SCH-R910 is a few years old, a 4G phone. The other is an LG phone that only runs on their 1X CDMA network.

The LG works fine. My Samsung though – I can surf the web, check email, get on Facebook, and even SMS works. But voice service exhibits odd behavior. I can watch the signal type go from 4G to nothing but four bars for signal the minute I press the send button.

I’ve tried calling MetroPCS support from a wired phone. The call was dropped. So I do what I always do when service doesn’t meet my expectations, I rip them here on the blog. That usually gets a response believe it or not, particularly if you use the right tags.

It appears they did an upgrade to their 4G network that breaks voice functionality. Phone is kind of useless, I say kind of because I use it more for net, etc. But I pay for voice.

So MetroPCS – fix it!

Sage works now

So when I had upgraded to Firefox 22 I noticed the Sage 1.4 didn’t work. The solution as it was, was to download Sage 1.5. The issue I ran into was that the update button on the Sage sidebar didn’t work. You could click it until you were blue in the face.

Then I realized it would update the feeds when you restarted the browser. Still, this is clunky.

A day or two ago I noted it all worked.  So I looked at the version identifier was 1.5.1 – it got updated. Now the update button works, and in the feed listing you know have mark all as read/unread.

So all is once again functional. I know I had seen submissions to their bugtracker site identifying the issue so it wouldn’t be too long before they fixed the problem.

Thomas Peters has a broken neck

Yes, NOM bigot Thomas Peters was in a car wreck. Broke his freaking neck. If that’s not cosmic justice I don’t know what is.

I’m posting this here because my comment to that effect got hosed on Joe My God.

But I note that things aren’t going well for the bigots lately. First you have Brian Brown yammering about their wins of yesteryear. You have MORE states and countries with marriage equality and the message of the bigots is falling flat.

Roll your own 6m antenna tuner

So I’m active on Facebook Amateur Radio groups. And one guy lamented that they couldn’t find any antenna tuners for the 6m (50MHz) band.

I stated you could make your own. All it is is a couple of air variable capacitors and a coil between the input and output of the device. In essence you’re matching the 50 ohm impedance of your radio to the antenna. This impacts SWR.
If you’re interested, AA3SJ (Another interesting call sign. I like mine better though, KD1S, short, sweet and to the point!) has an interesting comparison of T style and Pi style matching networks.

The Washington Times Comment War

It has gone completely silent. I’m getting no more email updates from Disqus. And I checked and I noticed a few of my more choice comments were deleted.

So I gotta wonder what the hell is going on. Yet another reason I won’t go whole hog and enable Disqus on this blog.

Ad Hominem Never Wins (Zimmerman Comments on Washington Times)

So I’ve been having a little one armed battle of wits on Washington Times. If you read this blog you know I’m pretty left leaning liberal. And I tend to be able to see nuance in things, like how the prosecutor in the Zimmerman case left out relevant elements because they were afraid of starting a race war.

But then the comments start getting silly:

This thread tickled me:

Wait, wait. You prayed with your kids, made sure they were involved in structured activities and yet they’re still not perfect? I wonder what went wrong.

Major –> Truthspew 7 hours ago

Because none of us are perfect you kumquat…and he accepts that as a fact of life.

Truthspew –>  Major 7 hours ago

How dare you call me a Rutaceae! And a lot of us are a whole lot more perfect because we don’t have the veiled racist attitudes that many of the comments on this post seem to display. And the notion that none of us are perfect, that’s straight out of Christian dogma.

Then there’s this thread – where the ad hominem resembles pot calling kettle black:

Oh sure – examine no-fault divorce. Make it harder to divorce and watch the domestic violence rate increase. I’m always appalled by those who are one sided thinkers like you guys.

Mr. Answer to Everything, Solution to Nothing …

Oh Bottomless Well of Ignorance, look at all your postings … all you do is criticize.

instead of finding fault with other’s proposals, why don’t you solve “a” problem?

Truthspew –> esquire27 hours ago

If you note I didn’t given the answers per se, I asked you to think about the ‘why’ in all of this. The fact that you resort to ad hominem indicates you are intellectually lazy and cannot form a proper rebuttal.

whereas U R merely intellectually challenged.

My response for some reason disappeared – in essence I told him pot, meet kettle.

The racist hate regarding the Zimmerman case is stunning

I love that more sites are using Disqus. I won’t use it here simply because WordPress’s commenting system works for me.

You have all sorts of people trying to paint Trayvon Martin as the aggressor. But I think I’ve explained enough that he was the one accosted by Zimmerman and his response was appropriate.

So I’ve been commenting on a Washington Times article – one of the things I really, really enjoy is calling out the homophobic and racist bigots. If you’re so brave go read the article and the comments. I post as Truthspew there so mine will be obvious.

You have the welfare queen arguments, even though welfare has been decimated since Ronald Reagan held office. Then you have the ‘fact’ that Black people reproduce faster than White people which is half truth, actually it’s the Latino population that is growing exponentially.

And then of course the Obama hate is showing in almost every comment. And they use derogatory spelling for the name, de riguer.

One guy called me a Kumquat so I told him I was offended by being called a Rutaceae, which is the family name for the fruit bearing trees. I bet he’s going to go off that I used a Latin name.

Like I said – and I used the old proverb more likely from Native American about walking a mile in a man’s shoes. I also seem to recall this being taught in my Catholic religious education over twelve years. And it’s a pretty good principle to live by, it shows empathy which a lot of people who post comments on the Washington Times article I linked seem not to have.
