Apache 2.2.4 for Windows Dies with error 10048

To my regulars, sorry but this was just mildly frustrating to fix so if I can help another developer out there so be it.

So I’ve dusted off my PHP and Apache books since I’m doing a little development with PHP and needed to re-install the two applications. MySQL is still on my machine because I’ve got a couple databases in there that I want to keep.

Anyhow, I downloaded Apache 2.2.4 for Windows without source. But every time I’d try to run it I’d get an error 10048 Address Already in use. Went nuts, thinking maybe I had a stub of Apache 1.3 that was interfering but that wasn’t it.

A google search yielded my answer and by using a windows utility called netstat I was able to find the offender. Seems Skype was using port 80 for itself and Apache wanted to use it too. So I quit Skype and suddenly Apache would start up. Yippee! My next step was to launch the msconfig.exe application and in the startup tab unclick Skype.

Now when the machine starts up Apache runs without issue and I can manually start Skype and everything is happy. You just can’t have Skype start BEFORE Apache.

I hope this helps someone else out there.

Say what bitch?

Well, it seems that a British writer got onto a cruise with 500 readers of the National Review. In Ship of Fools, Johann Hari finds out what the neo-cons REALLY think about we liberal folk.

One woman has the stones to say that:

Of course, we need to execute some of these people,” I wake up. Who do we need to execute? She runs her fingers through the sand lazily. “A few of these prominent liberals who are trying to demoralise the country,” she says. “Just take a couple of these anti-war people off to the gas chamber for treason to show, if you try to bring down America at a time of war, that’s what you’ll get.” She squints at the sun and smiles. ” Then things’ll change.”

Cupcake, some of we liberals can’t wait for your old guard to die off and then when you lose your mouthpieces, you’ll realize what a fool you are. Because no doubt, people like that woman are fools. Yet it is due to those fools that we’ve suffered 6+ years of George W. Bush & Co.

I also love the parts where the neo-cons obviously don’t understand the Constitution of the United States. And one particular neo-con is a federal judge and he doesn’t understand the Constitution.

In addition we also have the black man who is against affirmative action while others would like to suicide bomb the U.N. It’s almost surreal.

I’m so happy that the Democrats re-took congress in 2006, but these folks see it as a disaster. Lets see, what has congress done in the past six months or so? They’ve had hundreds of oversight hearings, blocked nomination of ideologue judges to the federal judiciary, and generally acted in the manner that congress should, as a check against the unlimited power of the executive or judicial branches. Seems people have forgotten about checks and balances based upon approval ratings for congress. Most of the reason for the low approval ratings is that people have finally wizened up to the fact that our politicians are well paid for, just not by us.

Post TV Life

Well it’s now been a full two months with no television and I’m loving it. It was a distraction to say the least. An outright waste of money when you factor in cable prices and electricity used.

I did stumble on a new competitor to Apple TV though, it’s called Vudu. In essence is slipstreams movies to you on a regular basis. The networks are toast – what they offer is just so much pablum for the masses. I’d rather be able to just keep things like they are now, one broadband connection, a plethora of information and entertainment. But the new things are very sweet, including Joost. As a matter of fact there are a number of TV sites out there at the moment. And if I could possibly get a joost invite I’d be a very happy guy.

But the Vudu device seems VERY slick. Plug it into the network and start watching. I’m awaiting pricing but they say it’ll be less than $300 for the box which I can deal with, what I’m more interested in is the subscription pricing which hasn’t been announced yet. If it’s cheaper than cable I’ll go for it since even basic cable is no bargain at $47 a month.

But in reality I hear enough music, read enough news, and see enough video on the web to sate me. For example, here’s some news you won’t get through the mainstream media. I was aware of the impeachment protests but this one has pictures and has the added benefit of being at a place where Dubya himself was present. Of course the fucking coward snuck in through another entrance but he’s got to know the tide is turning against him. I just say it’s six years too late. Though A28 did put up a good fight in San Francisco but then would I have expected anything less from those in that city? No I would not. It did surprise me that there was no A28 chapter here in Providence but there is on in Boston.

Put it this way, if we manage to impeach Bush and Cheney just before the elections, it would mean Nancy Pelosi would assume the presidency. Oh I’d enjoy the hell out of that, but the neocons would be apoplectic and rabid in their attacks. Actually it’d be fun watching the Republican party implode.

Republicans and Dirty Tricks

By now we all know that if a Republican candidate can’t capture votes with their ideas, they’ll instead attempt to disenfranchise voters.

It is no secret that Republicans will try anything to get elected. Just look at Steve Lafffey, he bought the RNC package hook, line and sinker. But Lincoln Chaffee was just too well loved. Even he couldn’t get past Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse.

But even when they try, they’re like the gang that can’t shoot straight as has been evidenced by the recent elections.

We’re on to their tricks. They hadn’t counted on the fierce presence of blogs and the web. But even now I’m starting to see lots of conservative blogs, etc. It’ll take a while for the pendulum to swing completely into the Democrats camp, but when it does it will be there for about twenty years. And with any luck this time they’ll have a solid majority so that the Republicans won’t get any press at all.
